Gulf Coast Regional Blood Drive PDF Print E-mail
Written by Michael Wong
Saturday, 22 May 2010 20:56
Troop 204 has agreed to assist the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center with its yearly blood drives at SS&J. In 2010, these will be conducted on June 13, August 15, and November 7.

Scouts will facilitate donation sign-up at this weekend's Troop 204 Spaghetti Dinner and at SS&J Masses two weeks before each drive, and, on the day of the drive, set up, greet, serve snacks, serve lunch to Blood Center staff, and take down/cleanup.  Each person who signs up to donate on June 13 at the Dinner, will be eligible to win a SanDisk MP3 Player.

We need an adult volunteer to coordinate the Troop's involvement in this important program for the Blood Center, SS&J, and our community. Please contact Jim Wehrfritz at 832.319.8112 or George Wasaff at 713.857.8049 by phone if you can accept this critical role...no experience necessary!

And, of course, we'll need Scouts and Scouters to staff the sign-up tables at the Spaghetti Dinner and Masses and handle duties the day of the drives. 4 Scouts are needed this Saturday night. My son Bill will bring the June 13 sign-up form and raffle tickets.

We're excited to participate in such a worthwile life-saving activity which helps our community and our charter organization, SS&J. Please support this effort from its outset.

Troop 204 has had some time to rest from their adventure in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  You can relive some of those memories with this youtube video courtesy of Kevin Howe.  It contains highlights of the 2010 summer camp at Claytor Lake Aquatic Base.

Back on the Magic School Bus.  If only it were that easy.  Sounds like everyone had a great time.  I know they will miss the snack bar.

I've posted some of the last pictures from camp here.

Know any good sing-a-longs? That's probably what they're singing right now.  Either that or they're sacked out.  At 8:15 AM the bus was loaded and ready to rock and roll!  I prefer to sleep a little later on Saturdays.

Sometimes being there in person is faster than anything we do - electronic or snailmail.  Here are some pictures I just received regarding the last day at Claytor Lake.

Last Night at Camp PDF Print E-mail

It's the last night at camp.  The scouts are likely circling around the last campfire and preparing for their skits.

The last two years had 204 doing the "If I were not a Boy Scout" skit.  It was so successful at Camp Alexander that the intention was to repeat it at Sid Richardson.  I wonder what skit 204 plans to do tonight.

Thanks to Kevin Howe who just sent us the last pictures and video from Claytor Lake.

It's the last full day of camp.  Time to cram in all the fun you can before hitting the road.

Everyone is getting into water activities - even at Camp Ottari.  I'm not sure that hand paddling is the most efficient way to get from point A to B, but it sure looks fun!  See more pictures at Ottari here.  The Camp Ottari reporters have fixed their wireless connectivity issues and transmitted some more pictures on activities from Wednesday to this morning.

The Claytor Lake group continues to forge ahead by sending us pictures and videos.  Al looks like he caught a fish that could feed the entire high adventure group.

Claytor Lake - Full Throttle! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 17 June 2010 11:15

Our reporter on the scene - Kevin Howe - has relayed the following story from the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.

Two words can describe Claytor...FULL THROTTLE!  After several days of safety instruction, Boater Safety Certification and practice, it was time for some fun.  The boys went full throttle on Personal Water Crafts (PWC's), sailboats (large and small) and kayaks exploring around the lake.

Claytor Lake knows how to do things BIG.  While most summer camps have a bugler for morning and evening flag ceremonies, Camp at Claytor Lake uses a tuba for reveille.  Actually, it's a Susaphone.  In addition, the boys are fascinated at the two HUGE ceiling fans used to cool the dining hall.  The fans are "appropriately" named by the manufacturer.  They're probably the same manufacturer that makes them for 24 Hour Fitness.

After a brief, but heavy shower, the skies cleared and camp was blessed with a double rainbow.  The evening ended with free time for the boys to enjoy more dock jumping, tubing, and rides on the Rocket (aka banana float tube).

The Adventure Continues PDF Print E-mail

The rain has stopped and the water looks great.  You find more pictures on Claytor Lake here.

It's gone quiet in terms of news.  That usually means they're having a good time and finding it hard to get back to us.  Either that or the Camp Ottari team is sandbagging and waiting to send us a barrage of photos and stories.

It usually takes until Wednesday night to Thursday for a group of boys on such an adventure to bond and become a community.  Friendships are made through the shared experience at camp.

Meanwhile, it's getting hot and muggy back here in the Woodlands.  You don't need a weather report to know what's going on.

The race is on!   Claytor Lake scouts have thrown down the gauntlet by sending video clips of their group.  Both the latest pictures and video clips are in the gallery.

On the other hand, the Camp Ottari group has been working hard to relay stories.   In particular, Brian Ledeboer has been great at tagging pictures with interesting commentary.  Once we can figure out a way to put a spin on the commentary, you'll know about it.

So how did this "competition" come about?  Wireless connectivity is not exactly top priority at any remote location.  Our troop leaders have been creative and have found ways to upload batches of files to email servers that specialize in large file delivery.  Call them the UPS of the Internet.

The water is looking mighty nice now that is the humidity has picked up in Houston.

Clayton Lake Adventure PDF Print E-mail

Claytor Lake Aquatic Base is your location for adventure!  Sunday began with a welcome dinner, followed by first 1/2 of 5-hour mandatory Boater Safety Certification class Sunday night.  Is that intense or what?  Monday was a full day of outdoor water activities including snorkeling, sailing, motor boating, scuba, fishing, rowing, etc.  I'm tired already.

It was a fun and productive Day two at Claytor Lake beginning with assembly, breakfast, then off to aquatic classes.  The boys completed their Boater Safety State Certification requirements and were behind the wheels, handle bars, tillers and oars today.

A brief afternoon shower cooled everyone off just before dinner.  The boys hung out at the soda fountain - which I hear is awesome - and then attended a first aid refresher course, enjoyed movie night, and also participated in "dock jumping" from the two-story boathouse upper terrace.  Did I say "two story"?  It's a very small "two story".

The adult leaders volunteered as dock-hands on Day 2 and installed posts to extend the rope railing on the camp docks. They've also become an experienced commercial dish washing crew for the camp this week.  I used to do commercial dishwashing but I need re-certification this year.  Who do I get to sign off?

Check out the Claytor Lake pictures here.  If you visited the gallery before 10 PM Tuesday you have missed a few pictures.  Meanwhile those interested in Camp Ottari activities can get more glimpses into camp life in Part 2.
